Knowledge Mobilization

York University is an award-winning leader in Knowledge Mobilization (KMb) in Canada and internationally.  KMb is a suite of activities that enhances the connection between researchers and end users: knowledge brokering & partnership support, training & capacity building, and supporting research grants and research event planning. York’s Knowledge Mobilization Unit received the Knowledge Economy Network Best Practice Award from the European-based Knowledge Economy Network (KEN) in 2012.

Knowledge Brokering & Partnership Support

Central to the work of the Knowledge Mobilization Unit at York University is brokering colaborative research projects and activity. We seek to connect York University researchers (faculty and graduate students) with community organizations, business and industry leaders, and policy professionals in all levels of government. Our knowledge brokers will help support researchers to build a mutually beneficial relationship with prospective non-academic partners.

York’s leadership within the ResearchImpact network also opens up collaborative opportunities across the country. Knowledge brokers at 11 Canadian universities support relationship building and collaborative project development across the country.

Training & Capacity Building

We provide learning opportunities for York researchers, staff, graduate students and external partners to help make research relevant to professional practice and policy development. We can deliver customized learning sessions to your research team.

Examples of learning sessions we have offered in the past include:

  • Building a Knowledge Mobilization Strategy
  • Impact and Accountability in Knowledge Mobilization
  • Clear Language Writing and Design Principles
  • Research Snapshots – Clear Language Research Summaries
  • Social Media for Research
  • Social Media Strategy Building for Research Teams
  • Hands-on Training in WordPress and Twitter

Research Grant Support

Knowledge Mobilization is increasingly important in research in Canada. Granting councils are seeking a clear and comprehensive KMb plan for many grants. We are trained to provide assistance in the development of a tailored KMb plan. We can provide training and support, and in some cases in-kind service support for your project. We can review and provide feedback on all KMb plans prior to their submission.
